Mornings are always busy at Maitland’s Athena Roasted Chicken, where Andreas Afxendiou and his team quickly hustle around the kitchen to prepare for another day of serving hungry guests.
Athena has been an institution for authentic Mediterranean and deli-style eats for more than three decades at 487 S. Orlando Ave. inside the Shoppes at Maitland.
Andreas prides himself on golden roasted chicken and Greek salads, but much of his menu is gifted with many other long-cherished recipes from his family. Traditional items include pita wraps, gyros, moussaka, tabbouleh, hummus and dolmades.
He grew up on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus and moved to the Orlando area 35 years ago to study computer science at the University of Central Florida. After graduation, he returned to Cyprus to work in computers. It took only two years before the idea to create authentic Mediterranean food in Central Florida brought him to Maitland.
“Maitland has been very good to me,” Andreas said. “We have people who visit us. Then they bring their kids and their grandkids – those are many of our customers.”
